A nightstand is judged on height and reach long before it is judged on looks. Three measurements decide whether it will actually work beside your bed.
Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, then look for a nightstand within about two inches of that number. Sit too low and you are reaching down for a glass of water in the dark; sit too high and it crowds the headboard. This collection runs from compact single-drawer designs up to taller two-drawer styles, so there is usually a fit whether you have a low platform bed or a tall upholstered one.
A single drawer over an open shelf keeps books and a charger close but tidy, and three of the nightstands here are built that way. Two drawers hide cords, glasses and medication completely, which matters more when the bedroom is small and the nightstand is the first thing you see from the doorway. Either way, plan for about a 12-inch square of clear top for a lamp, a phone and a glass.
Aim for a nightstand close to the width of the space between your bed and the wall, without blocking a closet door or a walkway. In narrower Victoria condo and character-home bedrooms, a slim single-drawer design on one side paired with a wall-mounted reading light frees up the floor entirely.
Buying two nightstands is the easy default, but it is not a rule. A single nightstand on the entry side of the bed, with a wall light on the other, is often the better answer in a smaller Victoria or Langford bedroom.
