A coffee table is sized against the sofa it serves, not the room it sits in. Get the proportion and the walking space right and almost any style will work.
Start with a coffee table about two-thirds the length of your sofa, and leave 14 to 18 inches between the two so people can pass without turning sideways. Most living rooms land between 30 and 48 inches. The tables here run from around 29 inches for a condo layout up to 122 inches for a long sectional. Height is easier: aim level with the sofa seat or an inch or two below.
Round and oval tops have no corners to catch a shin, which is why they suit tight condo living rooms and homes with small children. Rectangles work best in front of a long sofa or a sectional.
