Start with how many people need to sit down, then check whether the room can give those chairs somewhere to go. Almost every dining table regret traces back to the second step.
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per person. A 60 inch rectangular table comfortably seats six, 72 to 84 inches seats eight, and the largest tables in this collection reach around 155 inches. Round tables seat people more evenly for conversation: a 47 or 48 inch round takes four, and a 55 to 60 inch round takes six.
Plan for 36 inches of clearance between every edge of the table and the nearest wall or cabinet, and a little more where people have to walk behind someone who is seated.
