This is the measurement that decides whether a stool works at all, and it is the single most common reason one gets sent back. Take it before you shop.
A standard kitchen counter is about 36 inches high and takes a counter stool with a seat around 24 to 26 inches. A raised island or a proper bar is usually 42 inches and needs a bar stool with a seat around 29 to 31 inches. Aim for 9 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the overhang so knees clear comfortably.
Height-adjustable stools span both counter and bar height and are the safe choice if you are buying before the counter is installed. Backless stools tuck completely under the overhang and visually disappear in a small kitchen, while a low back is more comfortable if people genuinely eat there rather than just perch. Do not overlook the footrest: without one, legs dangle and nobody stays long, and most of the stools here include one.
Allow 26 to 30 inches between stool centres. In practice that is two stools at a five-foot island and three at seven feet. Leather and faux leather seats wipe clean next to a cooktop, and metal or iron frames take daily knocks without showing them. Check for floor protectors on the feet if you have hardwood.
Newer Langford, Colwood and Westshore builds almost always have a single-level island at standard 36 inch counter height, which means counter stools rather than bar stools. Older Victoria and Saanich kitchens more often have a raised peninsula or a two-tier island, where the upper level sits at 42 inches and takes true bar height. If your kitchen has both levels, adjustable stools are the simplest way to avoid owning two sets.
